CGYWG member and Camden Railway Heritage Trust chair, Peter Darley on the history of the site
Our supermarket site lies in an area of Camden that has diverse industrial heritage. In the 1800s, the area was a goods yard and depot that serviced the railway line between London and Birmingham. When it was in full operation, trains arrived day and night and the area was full of activity.
During this period, the area became an important site for industry and transportation in London and the outer regions. Layers of operation were built on top of each other with the construction of underground vaults for rail workshops, stores, coal stores and drops, to ground surface yards and up to higher levels that were constructed above ground level to carry the rail main line over Regents Canal.
Elements of this industrial heritage still exist today. Part of our store’s site is built on the higher levels that were constructed for the railway line, while the winding engine vaults sit underground, beneath the store.
